Get a real sense of scale at Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers

Even visiting the great swathes of ice that make up Franz and Fox Glaciers in peak summer, you’ll need your puffer jacket. The glaciers are two of only three places in the world where you can view the shifting ice descending into rainforest and nowhere else do glaciers come so close to the coast. Franz Josef might win on the picturesque front, but you can get much closer to Fox. While you can view them both from a distance, the actual ice is only accessible on guided hikes or heli-tours to protect the fragile natural environment. Discover deep crevasses, fantastically shaped ice caves and a sense of just how tiny you are when standing on the ice. Whichever way you view them, Fox and Franz Josef are almost like prehistoric creatures, seriously spectacular, with slightly intimidating personalities that demand your utmost respect.
